min Announces Editorial & Design Award Winners
Wednesday, November 18, 2009

Hard-hitting exposés of America’s deep recession, creative takes on popular culture and tips on personal rejuvenation led the field in min's Editorial & Design Awards, which were announced this morning at a breakfast event at New York's Grand Hyatt.

BusinessWeek’s superb exposé of subprime bankers slinking back into the market in late 2008 won the top nod for Investigative & News Coverage. Also digging deeper into the circumstances leading to our economic crisis, Fortune’s hour-by-hour recounting of the big bank collapse of 2008 (“Three Days that Shook the World”) won for Best Feature.

Awards were given in 27 editorial and design categories. Jackie Leo, legendary former editor of Reader’s Digest and numerous other leading service titles, gave the morning’s keynote. Leo was also present for her induction into the min Editorial Hall of Fame. She was recognized for her editorial leadership across many titles in print, TV and online media. “She was a multiplatform editor before multiplatform was cool,” said min editors during the presentation today.

Leo was joined on stage by fellow inductees Sally Lee of Ladies' Home Journal, Ellen Levine of Hearst Magazines, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia’s chief creative officer Gael Towey and John Rasmus of National Geographic Adventure. Vogue editor Anna Wintour and former Variety editor Peter Bart were also inducted into the Hall of Fame.

In addition to tough investigative pieces and fabled careers, min celebrated the best in service and entertainment journalism. Entertainment Weekly enjoyed multiple wins—for photojournalism in its special Photo Issue, for its PopWatch blog, for Ken Tucker’s “Watching TV” column and for a feature story on the retirement life of Cheeta the Hollywood chimp.

Among women’s service books, SELF magazine earned two awards, one for its photo gallery accompanying a feature on coffee and another in the Single Article category for an exposé of poor quality control among generic drug manufacturers. Fitness' “Bikini Body” workout pictorial was recognized as the best How-To Instructional piece. And Parents magazine won for Editorial Series for its ongoing “Small World” tips for raising children in a multicultural America.

In b2b, the military periodical Star & Stripes won praise for two special publications. Its Stripes Gamer magazine on video gaming served the troops by supplying much-needed diversion. Its annual Heroes 2009 issue was a stirring monument to personal heroism among the men and women in the Middle East war zones.

This first annual min Editorial & Design Awards were designed to acknowledge the unique and ongoing contributions that magazine brands are making to print and online content.

The full list of award winners and honorable mentions is available online, as is a special digital edition of min. Also, view images from the Editorial & Design Awards breakfast ceremony.
