The Washington Post reported today that its executive editor, Leonard Downie Jr., will be leaving his post Sept. 8. Downie, who led the Post's editorial coverage for 17 years, told the newsroom yesterday that he wants to spend more time with his wife, Janice. Under Downie, the Post’s newsroom won 25 Pulitzer Prizes. Prior to becoming executive editor, Downie served under Ben Bradlee as managing editor.

Publisher Katharine Weymouth will "announce a successor soon," according to Post staff writer Howard Kurtz's report.
