The "French Revolution" at Elle-/Car and Driver-/Woman's Day-flagshipped Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S. accelerated Wednesday (June 18) with the announced promotion of Paris-based Lagardère Active chief operating officer (directeur général délégué) Alain Lemarchand to New York-based HFM U.S. chief executive officer, effective September 1.  Concurrently Jack Kliger, who has been HFM U.S. president /ceo since June 1999, becomes chairman.

With the restructuring, the top two day-to-day officers at HFM U.S. will be French, as Lemarchand will be joining executive vp/chief operating officer Philippe Guelton.   min is told that like Guelton, Lemarchand is fluent in English.  He has worked in the U.S. in the past, and  he knows the marketplace.

Kliger, as chairman, will be involved in "strategic decisions," which includes acquisitions.  (The strong Euro/weak dollar gives HFM U.S. an advantage.)   His nine-year tenure had a rough beginning with the July 1999 death of John F. Kennedy, Jr., and the subsequent (January 2001) closure of George, but the company has been in the forefront of digital expansion, with the 2007 buy of Jumpstart Automotive Media being a key example.  Per the press release, 10% -plus of HFM U.S.' revenues will be digitally generated.

Kliger has been very respected and outspoken in the magazine community for his advocacy (while Magazine Publishers of America 2005-2007 chairman) of emphasizing audience over circulation.   The former GQ/Glamour publisher was Parade executive vp from 1997-1999 and Condé Nast executive vp from 1994-1997.
