The 1990 launch was the first for Disney's Buena Vista Magazines unit (FamilyFun and Wondertime followed), and the 1.2 million circulation DA stood out for being "dual audience tween," with boys attracted to comic-book "condensations" of such hit Disney movies as Aladdin, Hercules, and Tarzan. But in 2007, the Internet changed the dynamic, and BVM's announced November 2007 closure of DA follows that--by other publishers--of Ellegirl, Nick Jr, and Teen People. Disney will remain in "kids" print with SIPs (special-interest publications ) Disney Fairies, Disney Pirates, Disney Princess and Power Rangers, and if High School Musical is the smash that everyone predicts, it will have an SIP, too.
Notable DA alumni... Founding publisher Lynn Lehmkuhl (now at Newspaper National Network), and early-1990s successor Nina Lawrence (now W publisher).
