“We all know the ads, but we don’t know the people behind them,” said Ann Cooper, co-curator of the New York Public Library's exhibit The Real Men & Women of Madison Avenue and Their Impact on American Culture, which opened June 23. We couldn’t have agreed more, noting the iconic images that greeted us in the library’s Healy Hall, including a grainy shot of the Marlboro Man (pre-lung cancer), M&M’s (one set of hands full of icky melted chocolate next to another full of the intact candies) and the dancing silhouette with white iPod ear buds.

We asked Cooper, who formerly was editor of min Magazine, if she had a  favorite ad in the show. Her pick: Charles Barkley for Nike touting the slogan: “The meek may inherit the Earth—but they won’t get the ball.” Indeed. Those honored include Julian Koenig (Volkswagen), Bill Bernbach (Avis Car Rental) and Mary Wells Lawrence (Benson & Hedges)—not a meek soul among them. All the agency people honored in the exhibit have been inducted in The One Club’s Creative Hall of Fame; The One Club sponsored the exhibit.  The exhibit will run through Sept. 26 at the New York Public Library, 188 Madison Avenue at 34th St.
