Real Simple Gets Thrifty For Charity

This week, we did our best to keep it real and to keep it simple. The Real Simple "Design on a Dime" charity cocktail party at the Metropolitan Pavillion was, well, simply amazing (ok, ok, we're done). The mag partnered with Housing Works Thrift Shops to host the fourth annual interior-design extravaganza, which kicked off with the cocktail party last night (VIP only) and then the event was opened to the public today and goes through tomorrow (May 9 and 10th). The party was complete with a silent auction (whoever got the awesome Jack White photograph should consider themselves lucky: we were about two Vodka-crans shy of trying to pry it off the wall just so people would stop outbidding us).

Over 30 designers (Sills Huniford, Thom Filica, Charlotte Moss and mayor Bloomberg's designer Jamie Drake, among others) designed unique rooms, the contents of which were for sale at up to 80% off with all proceeds benefitting Housing Works, NY's largest community-based AIDS organization which provides housing, medical care, job training and other lifesaving services to homeless and low-income New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS.

Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, designer James Huniford (Sills Huniford) and Real Simple managing editor, Kristin van Ogtrop co-chaired the event.

We have been to a lot of these types of events, but this was by far our favorite of the year. It was very smoothly-run, great decor, amazing cause and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Of course, buying leather couches at 80% off their retail price would put a smile on anyone's face...
